lyrics

I was always told in the story books of old
That the twilight of life was but a dawn
That love would rule the world, that our prayers would all be heard
And the shadows of fear overcome

Now that I have grown, become a man, and left my home
I won't suffer or stand for such childish things
And living in this world is a passage so absurd
We'll embrace the cold comfort it brings

But the sun over the water says I might just be wrong
As the wind over your shoulder joins our voices in song
Lay beside me in the churchyard, and we'll rot in the grass
And our bones will turn to starlight, all shining at last

You would say to me, 'how can this be,
when you nor me could ever fathom or touch such improbably things'
I would say to you that I know your words are true
And there's solace in the freedom it brings

But freedom is a word that every boy and every girl
Will in time come to know as a qualified pearl
When the soul is but a dream, there's no ghost in the machine
Just a fire, escaping to dirt

But the sun over the water says I might just be wrong
As the wind over your shoulder joins our voices in song
Lay beside me in the churchyard, and we'll rot in the grass
And our bones will turn to solder, all holding us fast
To the ground and the grass and the streams
And the colors of every bright star
Leaving behind all of that which defines who we are
